Scotland currently has two operational floating wind farms, Hywind Scotland and the Kincardine project, but now plans to add a further 27GW of floating wind over the next decade. Our existing wind farms and plans for future developments are outlined below and details of all these projects can be found on this portal site for offshore wind in Scotland.
The East Coast of Scotland is currently home to the bulk of our offshore wind farms in various stages of development. Projects include those in operation, under construction and some that are still in the planning pipeline.
Our oldest operational project, Robin Rigg, dates from 2010 and is in the Solway Firth on the southwest coast of Scotland. Taken together, these initial projects amount to over 10GW of offshore wind.
Our ScotWind leasing round will add a further 32.3GW to this total over the next 10 years and will extend the wind farms into the west and northern coasts, as well as the northern Isles. ScotWind also includes 21.8GW of commercial floating wind sites.
ScotWind has now been joined by 12 further floating wind projects from the INTOG (Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas) leasing round, amounting to 5.4GW in total, aimed at the electrification of our offshore oil and gas infrastructure to help decarbonise their production energy.
INTOG will be the first such leasing round in the world aimed at helping the oil and gas industry in the UK reach their Net Zero Basin target as part of the North Sea Transition Deal.
All of the above puts Scotland in the top ten of global offshore wind markets with a pipeline of 43.5GW, and, with just over 27GW of this being floating wind capacity, establishes Scotland as the number one market in the world for floating wind development.
